Trusted Coolangatta Electrician
Coolangatta packs a lot of different buildings into a small area. There are holiday towers along Marine Parade, brick walk-up unit blocks from the sixties and seventies, timber houses on the hill behind town and a busy strip of shops and cafes.
Each one has its own electrical quirks. Older unit blocks often still run on original wiring and shared meter boards, while beachfront fittings take a beating from salt spray all year.
Blue Ridge Electrical handles repairs, upgrades and new installations across Coolangatta, Kirra, Rainbow Bay and Greenmount.
Our base in Bilambil Heights is roughly 15 minutes away, and every job starts with a fixed quote.

Electrical Services Coolangatta

Flickering lights, dead power points and breakers that keep dropping out. We test the circuit properly and fix the cause, not only the symptom.

Plenty of Coolangatta units still have ceramic fuses or a board with no safety switch on the lighting circuit. We replace them with a properly protected switchboard.

A fan over the bed or on the balcony makes a sea breeze go further. We fit models rated for coastal air and check the ceiling can carry the weight.

Bathrooms in older unit blocks often vent into the ceiling space or nowhere at all. We install fans that move steam outside and stop mould taking hold.

Swap ageing fluorescent tubes and halogen downlights for LED fittings that run cooler, use far less power and suit low apartment ceilings.

Check on a holiday unit from wherever you are. We set up smart switches, remote air conditioning control and sensors that tell you when something is left on.

Cloth or rubber insulated cable still turns up in the older blocks and beach houses. We replace it circuit by circuit or as a full rewire during renovations.

Older kitchens were wired for a kettle and a toaster. We add outlets and dedicated circuits so the benchtop appliances stop tripping the breaker.

Queensland now expects interconnected photoelectric alarms in every bedroom and hallway. We install them and confirm the whole set sounds together.

24/7 Emergency Electrician Coolangatta
Coolangatta does not keep office hours and neither do electrical faults. If the power drops out in your unit, a breaker will not reset or you can smell something burning, ring us straight away, day or night.
Why Choose Blue Ridge Electrical?
We work in Queensland and New South Wales every week, so we know which rules apply on your side of Boundary Street and we follow them.
Booking lifts, arranging visitor parking, working around body corporate by-laws and keeping noise to sensible hours are part of the job for us.
On balconies and beachfront walls we use stainless or coated fittings and sealed outlets, because ordinary ones corrode within a couple of summers.

The person who answers the phone is part of the business. There is no call centre and no sales script.
We look at the job and give you a fixed figure in writing. If we find something unexpected, we stop and talk to you before going further.
Units do not have room for mess. We lay drop sheets, vacuum up dust and take old fittings and packaging away with us.

Local Electrician In Coolangatta
Coolangatta is the southernmost suburb of the Gold Coast and shares a main street, more or less, with Tweed Heads. From our base in Bilambil Heights it is around 15 minutes by road.
The town centre was built up in several waves. Guesthouses and timber cottages came first, then the brick and concrete unit blocks of the 1960s and 70s, and more recently the high-rise towers facing the beach. That means an electrician here can work on a 60 year old fuse board in the morning and a modern apartment distribution board after lunch.
The older walk-up blocks are where we see the most pressing safety work. Many were wired with far fewer circuits than a household uses today, and some units have never had a safety switch fitted to every circuit. Upgrading the unit board and replacing tired wiring makes a real difference to both safety and day-to-day convenience.
Because Queensland does not observe daylight saving, clocks in Coolangatta sit an hour behind Tweed Heads during summer. When we book a Coolangatta job we confirm the time in Queensland time so nobody is left waiting.
Supply on this side of the border comes through the Energex network. If the whole street is out, that is one for Energex. If your neighbours have power and you do not, the fault is almost certainly inside your property and we can help.
What We Install, Repair and Maintain

Queensland Smoke Alarm and Safety Switch Rules in Coolangatta
The 2027 smoke alarm deadline applies to every home. Since 1 January 2022, any Queensland dwelling that is sold, leased or has a lease renewed must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. From 1 January 2027 the same standard applies to all other homes, including owner-occupied units. Alarms must be hardwired or have a sealed 10 year battery and be under ten years old. We can check what you have and bring it up to standard in a single visit.
Rental units must have a safety switch on power circuits. Queensland law requires a safety switch on the power point circuits of every rental property. Many Coolangatta units are let to tenants or holidaymakers, so this affects a large share of the suburb. We test existing switches, fit them where they are missing and recommend protecting lighting circuits as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast can you reach Coolangatta in an emergency?
We are based about 15 minutes away in Bilambil Heights and answer the phone at all hours. When you ring we tell you honestly how long we will be and what to turn off while you wait.
Do the 2027 smoke alarm rules apply to my Coolangatta unit if I live in it?
Yes. From 1 January 2027 every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric alarms in each bedroom, in connecting hallways and on each level, whether it is rented or owner-occupied. If your unit was sold or leased after the start of 2022 it should already comply.
You are a New South Wales business. Can you work in Queensland?
Yes. Blue Ridge Electrical is licensed in both Queensland and New South Wales, and a good part of our week is spent on the Queensland side of the border.
Do I need body corporate approval for electrical work in my unit?
Work inside your lot, such as new power points or lights, generally does not need approval. Anything that touches common property, including the main switchboard, risers or an outside wall for an air conditioner, usually does. We can supply the details your committee asks for.
Why does my unit lose power when the kettle and air conditioner run together?
Older blocks were often wired with one or two power circuits for the whole unit. Running several high-draw appliances at once overloads the circuit and the breaker trips, as it should. Adding a dedicated circuit for the air conditioner or the kitchen usually fixes it.
What time zone do you use for bookings during daylight saving?
Queensland time for Queensland jobs. We confirm it when you book so there is no mix-up while the two towns are an hour apart.
Can you look after a holiday apartment between guests?
Yes. We work with letting agents and on-site managers, fit in around check-out and check-in times and treat anything that affects a guest stay as a priority.
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free and the price we give is fixed, so you know the cost before agreeing to anything.
Who do I call if the whole building has no power?
Check with your building manager first, then contact Energex, which runs the network in Coolangatta. If the outage is limited to your unit or one section of the building, the fault is likely on the property side and that is where we come in.
Can you upgrade the shared meter board in an older unit block?
Yes. We inspect the board, report to the body corporate and replace it with a new metering enclosure and main switchboard, coordinating the changeover with Energex so each unit is off for as short a time as possible.
Do you install air conditioning circuits in walk-up units?
We do. We check the unit board and the sub-main from the meter room first, then run a dedicated circuit and isolator for the new system.
Can you replace old bayonet light fittings and ceiling roses in a unit?
Yes. We swap them for modern LED fittings, check the condition of the cable at each point while we are there and let you know if any of it needs attention.
