Trusted Tumbulgum Electrician
Tumbulgum is one of the oldest villages on the Tweed, sitting where the Rous River joins the main stream. Its tavern, hall and timber shopfronts along Riverside Drive have seen well over a century of river traffic and river floods.
The floods of 2017 and 2022 went through many homes and businesses here. Electrical systems were among the worst affected, and rebuilding them with flooding in mind has become a priority.
Blue Ridge Electrical helps Tumbulgum owners repair, upgrade and protect their properties, and services the cane farms and rural homes around the village.
We travel about 20 minutes from Bilambil Heights and agree on a fixed price before starting.

Electrical Services Tumbulgum

After flooding or simply with age, faults develop in hidden places. We test each circuit and repair what we find.

We relocate and replace switchboards, mounting them as high as practical so the next flood is less likely to reach them.

Ceiling fans are a must in the valley’s humid summers. We install them on high timber ceilings and verandahs.

Homes that have been wet need to dry out and stay dry. Good exhaust ventilation helps prevent lingering damp and mould.

LED lighting that respects the character of older buildings while giving much better light for far less power.

Simple smart controls let you switch off circuits or check on a property remotely when the river is rising.

Full and partial rewires of older timber homes, using routes through the ceiling so cable stays above the waterline.

Power points raised to bench height or higher, a small change that saves a great deal of damage in a flood.

Smoke alarms installed and maintained to NSW requirements in homes, rentals and holiday cottages.

Local Electrician In Tumbulgum
Tumbulgum is on the Tweed River between Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah, about 20 minutes from our base in Bilambil Heights.
It was once the main settlement on the river, and many buildings date from the late 1800s and early 1900s. They are timber, often on low stumps, and have been wired and rewired at different times. It is common to find several generations of cable in one house.
Flooding defines the electrical work here. In early 2022 water rose far higher than many residents had ever seen. Any switchboard, outlet, appliance or cable that goes under must be inspected, and most of it replaced, before power is restored.
Since then, owners have been rebuilding with resilience in mind. That means moving the switchboard and meter higher, setting power points well above floor level, routing cable through the roof space instead of under the floor, and placing hot water systems and air conditioning units on raised platforms.
Around the village, cane farms and rural properties rely on pumps, sheds and long supply lines across the floodplain. The same principles apply there: keep equipment high, keep enclosures sealed and check everything after water has been through.
Many Tumbulgum homes have been raised since the floods, lifting the living area well above the old level. Raising a house changes its electrical layout completely. The mains, switchboard and every circuit have to be extended or rerouted, and the newly created space underneath needs careful thought, because anything installed there will get wet again one day.
For that under-house area we keep things simple and sacrificial: a minimum of fittings, all on their own circuit and safety switch, mounted as high as the space allows, so they can be isolated before a flood and replaced cheaply after one.

Tumbulgum Electrical Safety: After Floods and Every Day
Never restore power to a flooded home without an inspection. Floodwater leaves silt and moisture inside fittings, and damage is often invisible. NSW safety guidance is clear that a licensed electrician should inspect a flood-affected installation before it is re-energised. We test the wiring, replace damaged components and provide the certification needed for reconnection.
Smoke alarms and safety switches still matter. A working smoke alarm is required on every level of a NSW home, and old timber houses burn quickly. Safety switches that have been wet should be replaced, not dried and reused. We check both as part of any inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far away are you from Tumbulgum?
About 20 minutes by road. In flood conditions access may be cut, in which case we advise by phone and attend as soon as roads reopen.
What electrical work is needed after a flood?
Everything that has been under water needs inspection: switchboard, outlets, switches, fixed appliances and any cable below the flood line. Most submerged fittings are replaced. Cable can sometimes be retained if testing shows it is sound.
Can my switchboard be moved higher?
In most homes, yes. We relocate the board, extend or replace the circuits and coordinate with the network provider for the meter. It is one of the most effective flood resilience measures.
How high should power points be?
There is no single rule for existing homes, but we suggest at least bench height, and above the highest recorded flood level where that is practical. We can raise existing outlets during repairs.
Can you provide a report for my insurance claim?
Yes. We document the damage, the testing and the work required in a written report with photos.
Do you work on heritage buildings?
We do. We take care to hide cabling, avoid damage to original timber and select fittings in keeping with the building.
Is it worth rewiring an old timber house?
If testing shows deteriorated insulation or the house has been flooded, yes. A rewire also gives the chance to add circuits, safety switches and outlets where you need them.
What will flood repairs cost?
It depends on how high the water came and what was affected. We inspect first, then give a fixed written price so you and your insurer know the figure before work starts.
Are you qualified to certify a home for reconnection?
Yes. Our electricians are licensed in NSW and issue the compliance certificate that is needed before supply is restored.
My house is being raised. What happens to the electrics?
We disconnect before the lift, then extend or replace the mains and circuits once the house is at its new height. It is a good time to move the switchboard upstairs and rewire any older cable while access is easy.
Can circuits under the house be isolated separately?
Yes, and we recommend it. Putting the lower level on its own circuits means you can switch them off when a flood warning is issued and keep power on upstairs for as long as it is safe.
Should the hot water system and air conditioner be moved?
If they sit below the level water has reached before, yes. We work with your plumber and air conditioning installer to relocate them onto raised platforms or walls and extend the wiring to suit.
