How to Reduce Electricity Bills During a Tweed Heads Summer

Upgrade

Summer on the Tweed is hard to beat, until the electricity bill lands. Long, humid days mean the air conditioner runs for hours, the fridge works harder and the pool pump never seems to stop. For many households, the summer quarter is the most expensive of the year.

The good news is you do not have to sit in the heat to keep costs down. As a family-owned electrical business working across Tweed Heads and the Northern Rivers, we see the same few habits and household setups driving up bills in home after home. Most of them are easy to fix.

Why Summer Bills Climb on the Tweed

Our climate is the main culprit. It is not just the heat but the humidity, which makes homes feel warmer and pushes people to run cooling day and night. Add school holidays, more people at home and appliances working harder in hot conditions, and power use rises quickly.

Older homes can make it worse. Poor insulation, single-glazed windows facing west and older appliances all mean your cooling has to work much harder to keep up.

Get More From Your Air Conditioner

Air conditioning is usually the single biggest summer cost, so this is where small changes make the biggest difference.

Set a sensible temperature. Around 24 to 25 degrees is comfortable for most people and far cheaper to run than 18 or 20. Every degree lower makes the system work harder.

Use the dry mode on humid days. On sticky Tweed days, the dry or dehumidify setting can make a room feel much more comfortable without running full cooling.

Only cool the rooms you use. Close doors to empty rooms and, if you have a ducted system, use zoning to shut off areas no one is in.

Pre-cool before the hottest part of the day. Turning the system on earlier, when it is less hot outside, is easier on the unit than switching on at 4pm when the house is already baking.

Keep it serviced. Dusty filters and poor gas levels force your system to run longer for the same result. Clean the filters every few weeks in summer and book a regular service. Our air conditioning installation and servicing in Tweed Heads covers filter cleaning, gas checks and performance testing, so your system cools efficiently when you need it most.

If your system is more than 10 to 15 years old, it may be worth comparing the running costs of a modern inverter unit with a good energy star rating.

Let Ceiling Fans Do More of the Work

Ceiling fans use a fraction of the power of an air conditioner. On milder days, a fan alone is often enough, especially with windows open to catch the afternoon breeze.

On hotter days, use fans together with your air conditioner. The moving air makes the room feel cooler, so you can set the temperature a degree or two higher without noticing. Make sure your fans are set to summer mode, which pushes air down rather than pulling it up.

Outdoor fans on patios and decks also help you enjoy the evening without retreating inside to the air con. Our ceiling fan installation service covers indoor, outdoor and smart fans if you want to add more.

Block the Heat Before It Gets In

Keeping heat out is cheaper than cooling it down.

  • Close blinds and curtains on west and north-facing windows during the afternoon.
  • Use external shading such as awnings or shade sails where you can.
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows so cool air stays inside.
  • Check your ceiling insulation, which helps keep heat from the roof out of your living areas.

Watch the Appliances That Run All Day

Some of the biggest summer costs come from appliances you barely think about.

Fridges and freezers. These work harder in the heat. Check door seals, keep the coils clear of dust and leave space around the back for airflow. A second fridge in a hot garage can be surprisingly expensive to run in summer, so switch it off if you do not need it.

Pool pumps. Pumps often run longer than needed. A timer lets you run the pump for set hours, ideally during off-peak times or when your solar panels are producing power.

Standby power. TVs, gaming consoles and chargers left on standby all add up. Switching them off at the wall is an easy win.

Lighting. If your home still has old halogen downlights, switching to LEDs cuts power use and reduces heat in the room too.

Solar Panel Installation

Make the Most of Solar and Your Tariff

If you have solar panels, try to use your heavy appliances during the middle of the day when your system is producing the most power. Running the dishwasher, washing machine or pool pump in the daytime means you use your own power instead of buying it from the grid.

It is also worth checking your electricity plan. Many households are on time-of-use tariffs where power costs more in the late afternoon and evening. Knowing your peak times helps you shift usage and avoid the most expensive hours.

When to Call an Electrician

If your breakers keep tripping when the air con runs, your power bills seem high for your household size, or your switchboard is old, it may be time for an electrical check. Faulty wiring and overloaded circuits do not just waste money, they can also be a safety risk.
